* Health tracking technology has gone to the dogs

Health tracking technology has gone to the dogs… Now that the human fetish for counting our daily exercise level has reached saturation point… there’s a new trend which is expected to see pampered pooches wearing the k9 equivalent of a Fitbit or Vivo wrist strap…

The new devices allow owners to track their pet’s activity in real-time however in many cases they may get a shock when they realise that many pets choose to snooze when their owners are out…which may help explain why obesity rates here and overseas continue to rise.

With names like WonderWoof Bowties, PetBark and PetBot the new technology allows owners to not only stay connected some can even be remotely triggered to dispense a treat and get a selfie showing the dog eating it.

Speaking of technology – Users of 3D printers are continuing to improve the capacity of prosthetics they’re able to create… the latest occurring in Mexico.

A whippet called Romina is now able to move around almost as easily as she did before losing her leg, thanks to a prosthetic leg which mimics the movement of an actual leg.

You might have heard about another dog called Derby, born without fore-legs who was able to run for the first time after being 3D printed replacements – but Derby’s case, his missing legs were replaced with loops.

There’s been a lot of talk in the media about the potential for Drones to invade our privacy or cause problems for aircraft by illegally flying in flight paths… but over in the Netherlands they’ve come up with a unique solution using one of the world’s best hunters… an eagle.

A company in the Hague called Guard From Above, which provides trained raptors for security purposes was hired to train bald eagles to body slam the drone and then retrieve it once it hit the ground.

According to bird experts eagles have such superior eyesight that where we can only see a blur of rotors on the drones, the raptor can see each individual blade so they can strike it right in the centre without getting hit.

I feel a lot safer now.

* Scientists uncover source of animal 'pie-bald' patterns

Scientists in the UK may have uncovered what causes some animals to develop Pie-bald patterns…you know the big white patches that are often seen on the head and belly fur of cats, dogs and various farm animals.

It might not sound like rocket science… but by mapping how a mutated gene, actually the gene called KIT actually causes the strange patterns in the unborn animal… the researchers believe their formula will help in the development of treatments for serious human conditions called neurocristopathies which cause deafness, gut or heart defects and cancer in people when cells don’t move to the right position.

The study was reported in the journal ‘Nature Communications’.
