Lovin' Lavender.... But is It Ok For Our Pets?

Lovin' Lavender.... But is It Ok For Our Pets?

The Good…

Do you grow lavender at home? Do your dogs or cats love its fragrant smell?

Our 'old boy' Cosmo - (Min. Poodle sadly no longer with us) would often spend literally hours rolling in or brushing up against the rows of lavender bush in our back yard.

Cosmo was a ‘busy’ dog. Always up to something. But after his ‘lavender loving’ sessions, he’d come inside covered in bits of purple flower, happy as anything then lay down and sleep for hours!

We know various aromas can affect people and help de-stress so we thought we’d check out what research had been done into pets and how various smells affect them, and sure enough – a study by Dr. Deborah Wells in Ireland looked at the effect of Lavender oil on dogs, in particular whether it could have a calming effect on dogs and reduce excitement.

Houdini Dogs - The Great Dog-E- Escape!

Houdini Dogs - The Great Dog-E- Escape!

The sad facts speak for themselves. Some dogs manage to escape only once. These are the ones that don't make it home becoming either a road statistic or a pound inmate, where - if not identified - they're euthanased. A tiny percentage of these strays get 'lucky' and are re-sold to a new owner.

Statistics show that a dog will manage to escape his or her 'escape proof' yard 2-3 times on average, during its life.

That's too much like playing Russian Roulette for our liking - so here are some common reasons dogs escape and some solutions courtesy of www.boomerangid.com.au

Poo Eating Dogs! aka Coprophagia

Poo Eating Dogs! aka Coprophagia

We often get asked "HEELLP!... how can I stop my young dog eating his poo'?"...

First of all – don’t be embarrassed, poo-eating better known as copraphagia is surprisingly common!

Plus dogs such as Labradors seem to be the dog world’s equivalent of a vacuum cleaner – they’re willing to try to eat just about anything and everything but many other breeds of dog do this too .

There are lots of reasons dogs will eat their own droppings but the good news is that this can be fixed.

Attack Of The Killer (toy) Poodle!

Attack Of The Killer (toy) Poodle!

OMG – I’m mortified. Worse. I feel ridiculously guilty.

You see, my dog nearly caused an elderly Asian lady to have a heart attack.

I’d just gone outside to bring in the rubbish bins and thought nothing of letting my little gal accompany me so she could sniff the grass and enjoy whatever odours other passers by had left. It was mid-afternoon, nobody around, benefit of working from home.

Spring Has.... AHRRRCHOOO... Sprung!

Spring Has.... AHRRRCHOOO... Sprung!

Do you or someone you know suffer from allergies?

So do our pets… but their reaction to things like pollen, dust mites or weeds is very different to the sneezing and runny eyes humans get.

Bringing Devils Back To The Mainland Could Help Wildlife Conservation

Bringing Devils Back To The Mainland Could Help Wildlife Conservation

Australia’s mammal extinction crisis needs urgent attention. Foxes and cats have significantly contributed to the loss of some of our most vulnerable species. Alarmingly, the trend doesn’t look like slowing.

Many researchers agree that the dingo plays an important role in mitigating native mammal declines, because they suppress foxes and, in some cases, cats. So when we remove dingoes to benefit livestock, our native wildlife suffers.

Rainy Day Soggy Doggy Solutions!

Rainy Day Soggy Doggy Solutions!

It's raining cats and dogs! Well, not really but across South-Eastern Australia right now it almost feels like the annual wet season.

And that can mean 'soggy doggies'.

You see, most dogs these days are 'inside dogs' but they’re trained to go outside to do their 'business'.

But what happens when it’s raining?

Love Is In The Air - Hoo Hoo Hoo!

Love Is In The Air - Hoo Hoo Hoo!

It's not spring.. yet... but the Eastern Grass Owl can,t wait as they begin their search for a mate before heading off to nest and settle down with their new family.

The ground-nesting owls are listed as ‘vulnerable’ on the NSW Threatened Species list by the independent Scientific Committee.

Jill Smith, Conservation Officer at the Office of Environment and Heritage, said the ghostly night birds mainly inhabit open tussock grasslands, grassy heathland and agricultural crops such as sugar cane in the coastal plains of the NSW north coast with occasional records on the north-western slopes and south to Sydney and vagrant records farther south.

Perfect Poultry?

Perfect Poultry?

Ever considered giving your chooks a food supplement? I hadn’t.

A few weeks ago we told you about the winner of a ‘wildest chook’ competition… the winner was a feisty feathered female – who liked to pretend she was a rooster! Very funny.

The people running the comp, Sustenhance, make a product called ‘Perfect Poultry’ which they reckon helps all hens at all stages of life.

Accidental Poisoning... Minutes From Death!

Accidental Poisoning... Minutes From Death!

Have you ever stored a poison in a recycled water bottle? You might never do so again, after you read this – I know we won’t.

Good friend and life-long ‘ferret rescuer’ Sue O’Keefe was minutes away from becoming a widow yesterday… the culprit? A plastic water bottle…more precisely the substance in it.

Apparently Sue’s husband Mick was feeling a bit thirsty after feeding breakfast to the couple’s pack of rescue ferrets and grabbed what he thought was his re-purposed Gatorade bottle and took a big swig from it.

No Sun? You Can Still Have Doggy Fun... Here's How...

No Sun? You Can Still Have Doggy Fun... Here's How...

When the temperature drops… does your enthusiasm for outdoor doggy walks drop too?

I have to confess – mine does – but when I get the ‘doe-eyes’ from little Ms Troublemaker that it’s ‘that time of the day’, well, what’s a little -10 degrees icy wind chill factor compared to a happy dog? (ok – so maybe that’s a slight temperature exaggeration).

But depending on your location, the fair-dinkum outside weather conditions and your breed of pet, there are some fun indoor alternatives to walkies which will get you over the winter hump without fear of frost-bite.

Warning: Pets At Risk From Mother's Day Flowers And Chocolate!

With Mother’s Day just around the corner (Sunday 10 May), the experts at Bayer Animal Health asked us to help spread the word to Aussie mums re the dangers that common gifts like flowers and chocolate pose to family pets.

Lilies in particular are a popular choice as cut flowers in bouquets and arrangements, but unfortunately, they're extremely toxic to cats in particular.

Horses - They're Not Quite Like Cars!

Horses - They're Not Quite Like Cars!

When you're thinking of getting a horse - whether it's your first one or perhaps a second one as 'company' for another, it's not quite as easy as choosing a car - new or second-hand...

You see, when you look for a new or even used car there are fairly strong laws in place regarding the road worthiness of that car.

GP’s want to prescribe a new treatment for patients…a pet!

GP’s want to prescribe a new treatment for patients…a pet!

Don’t you just love surveys? Hot off the press from the USA comes this one which polled 1,000 physicians and found a whopping 97% of doctors “believe that pets provide health benefits to their human owners.”

Really? The medical fraternity’s finally caught on to what those of us in the Veterinary profession have known instinctively and experienced personally for eons…pets are good for us! (It’s ok if there’s a small smile creeping across your face at the moment).

Invisible Fumes... What's Coming Off YOUR Candle?

Invisible Fumes... What's Coming Off YOUR Candle?

Hands up those who ask their kids what they really want for their Birthday? (Especially your grown up kids)!

Our daughter’s wish list this week included ‘scented soy candles’ because they “wouldn’t set off her asthma”.

Excellent! A double whammy. A fun gift which would also be healthy for her and her cat Smokey.

Dogs: Trust (Almost) No-One!

Dogs: Trust (Almost) No-One!

New research shows dogs are more willing to trust a ‘new’ human than a familiar but ‘untrustworthy’ one.

If you’ve ever played the old ‘fake throw’ game where you pretend to throw a ball or other object for a dog to fetch…then you’ll know it’s a pretty short-lived game.

The dog very quickly susses out that you’re tricking them and refuses to take a step until they’ve ascertained you really have thrown something.

Dogs Never Lie About Love – But Guppies Do!

Dogs Never Lie About Love – But Guppies Do!

It’s just past Valentines Day and while those who received flowers are trying to work out how to keep them alive as long as possible (hint: chop their stems and change water every two days) here’s a comforting thought for the rest of us (yep me too) who might be flower-less.

(Not complaining – I put in a request for one of those weird expanding garden hoses which is yet to arrive – but I’m happy!)

Max's Jaw Dropping Operation! (Podcast!)

Max's Jaw Dropping Operation! (Podcast!)

We know some people would prefer to listen to some of our 'veterinary procedure' stories rather than watch and this is a good one to start withMax - an 11yr old Labrador had part of his lower jaw removed... but why?

The owners of Max - an 11yr old Labrador had been keeping an extra close eye on him given he’d already undergone several surgeries to remove lumps from his body… one of which was a ‘mast cell tumor’ – the type with the potential to spread rapidly to other parts of the body.
